What is HMDSO? :
Organosilicon compounds are organometallic compounds containing carbon and silicon bonds HMDSO is basically an organosilicon compound. This volatile colorless liquid is used as a solvent and as a reagent in organic synthesis. This liquid is prepared by the hydrolysis of trimethylsilyl chloride.
Hexamethyldisiloxane can be produced by the hydrolysis of trimethylsilyl chloride. It is also the result of the hydrolysis of silylethers and other silyl-protected functional groups. Hexamethyldisiloxane or HMDSO is mainly used asasource of the trimethylsilyl functional group in organic synthesis.
Chemistry of Organic Compound:
The IUPAC name of Hexamethyldisiloxane is trimethyl that is trimethylsilyloxy silane; it is also named as Disiloxane, hexamethyl. The various categories of this product are Organics,Siloxanes,Si (Classes of Silicon Compounds), Si-O Compounds, Synthetic Organic Chemistry,and Silicon Compounds (for Synthesis).Hexamethyldisiloxane is colorless or yellowish transparent liquid which is highly stable, but moisture sensitive. This compound is highly flammable, so you must keep it away from any sources of ignition or flame. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and fumes. Additionally, this chemical must be kept sealed in the container and should be stored in the cool, dark, well-ventilated and dry place.
Safety Features:
HMDSO is used as an internal standard for calibrating. HMDSO has a poorer solvating power than alkanes. It is used in liquid bandages such as cavilon spray, to protect damaged skin from irritation from other bodily fluids. Hexamethyldisiloxane is also used to soften as well as to remove the adhesive residues left by the medical tapes and bandages used on the injured part of the body without causing any further skin irritations.

Preparation of Hexamethyldisiloxane:
Add 62.49g (0.575mol) trimethylchlorosilane to the solution of 72.7g (0.06mol) N, N-dimethylaniline and 7g water and refluxe it for an hour. We can use atmospheric distillation to collect fractions of 98-101 °C after drying it we can get the 43-44g product. The yield is 92-94%. 2(CH3)3SiCl+H2O→ (CH3)3SiO (CH3)3Si+2HCl
